After a wave of new business from both companies and organisations, northern law firm Ward Hadaway has made a number of senior appointments and promotions to its public sector and commercial property team.

Tim Care, who already has an established national reputation for his work on multi-million pound local authority projects, has joined the company as a partner.

Working in the North-East for much of his career, he has advised on projects such as the £300m redevelopment of the Royal Victoria Infirmary and Freeman Hospitals in Newcastle and the libraries private finance initiative for Newcastle City Council. Care also advised South Tyneside and Gateshead Councils on their joint Building Schools for the Future project.

Taking Ward Hadaway’s commercial team’s head count to more than 70, associate solicitors Stephen Carrick and John Booth are the two latest specialists to join company, which has offices in Newcastle, Leeds and Manchester.

Both are experienced property lawyers, with Carrick having acted for retail and commercial developers, landowners and public sector organisations. Booth has also provided property support in relation to share and asset acquisitions and disposals.

In recent months the Ward Hadaway teams across all three cities have been strengthened by associate Julia Kenny and solicitor Tessa Petrides. This autumn newly qualified solicitors Hannah Taylor and Matthew Miller also joined commercial property teams on completion of their traineeships with the law firm.

“After being hard by the recession, the property industry is really bouncing back,” commented Neil Robson, partner and head of property at Ward Hadaway. “And with the wider economy picking up, we are also seeing a rise in demand from businesses looking for larger premises or expanding their existing operations.”

Developer Argent is losing two senior executives in the New Year. Partner James Heather and senior projects director Angela Fielding have both confirmed they are leaving the London-based company to “pursue new opportunities”.

Heather has worked with the developer for 20 years on schemes such as Brindleyplace in Birmingham and Forbury Square in Reading, before joining the company permanently in 1999. “The completion of One St Peter’s Square seemed like the natural time to bring my time at Argent to a close,” he said. “With two major tenants secured, I felt it was the right moment to look for a new challenge and pursue opportunities away from Argent.”

Fielding joined the developer in 2000, and has been involved in delivering One Piccadilly Gardens, Piccadilly Place and The Hive as well as One St Peter’s Square. She commented: “To have been involved in the successful delivery of over one-million square feet in Manchester is a huge privilege, and I’ve been lucky enough to work with some of the city’s most important influencers and ambassadors.”

Property asset management company Mainstay has appointed David Charlton — a former associate director at CBRE’s Birmingham office — to head its commercial team.

Also joining the Worcester-based firm from CBRE is senior surveyor Emily Filer. “We are delighted to have secured their services, as their big-firm background and experience will add a further dimension to our commercial property management capability,” said Mainstay chief executive Paul Crook.
