April Fools Day on a Sunday… Do your Office Prank on Monday instead

Posted on 1 April, 2012 by Kirsten Kennedy

Yes, it’s that day of the year where employees in commercial properties up and down the country brace themselves for balloons, tin foil and confetti around every corner – April Fools’ Day!

Sadly for the pranksters among our readership, this year it falls on a Sunday. However, here at Movehut HQ we are not going to let that stop us, and will be celebrating the hallowed day on Monday 2nd instead!

If you would like to join us, but can’t think of a workplace-appropriate prank, never fear – we have compiled a list of the best office pranks to give you some inspiration.

Of course, there are always the classics to fall back upon, such as cling-filming a co-worker’s desk, chair, computer – in fact, anything that cling film will cling to. However, one worker in a commercial property in Glasgow took this prank even further. The unnamed man covered every single item in his colleague’s office with tin foil, then covered the open doorway with a sheet of cling film – then, presumably, got as far away from the building as possible before the victim returned!

Pranks of this type can take a lot of time and effort to pull off, so we also have a suggestion for something a little less time consuming. If you work in an office or serviced office, where everyone uses a computer, you can always get a laugh from messing with the hardware of an unsuspecting colleague. For example, slightly unplugging the mouse and keyboard from the ports on a desktop computer always produces amusing short term results.

Or, for something a little more original, a well placed post-it note on the bottom of a mouse, preferably with the words “April Fool!” written on it, is guaranteed to raise a chuckle or two, as the tracker will be covered, making the mouse unresponsive. Cue frantic clicking and muttering while the rest of the office looks on and laughs!

However, some dedicated jokers like to go out of their way on the one day of the year that it is seen as acceptable, and pull pranks that will be joked about in the workplace for years to come. Gluing everything on a desk to the surface, moving the whole contents of an unsuspecting member of staff’s work area elsewhere in the building, and even releasing livestock into the workplace are only a few of the more extreme pranks passed around the internet. (Note – the last one will not be as effective if you work in agriculture.)

Yet one brave, brave soul will go down in history as either the most courageous, or most foolish, April Fool-er of all, as he took the decision to target the boss.

Although this hero among men is not named on the internet, many people have enjoyed his prank over and over again. Before his boss arrived in the morning, he ventured into his office armed only with a bumper pack of balloons and several bags of wedding confetti. He then proceeded to fill each balloon in the pack with a small amount of confetti, blow them up and, slowly, fill the office from floor to ceiling. Not only this, he placed small items on his boss’ desk, such as his work mobile phone, computer mouse, folded documents etc, into random balloons as he went.

His boss was most surprised to find his office filled with balloons upon arrival, and his surprise turned swiftly to dismay when he found an inventory of items hidden in the balloons attached to his door. He then spent much of the morning (and probably a good part of the afternoon) popping the balloons to retrieve the contents of his desk, thoroughly coating his office in confetti as he went.

We hope these stories have given you plenty to think about for your return to work tomorrow morning – and remember, check every chair before you sit down when you get there, just in case! As for us at the Movehut office, we’re heading to Poundland, as we have a lot of balloons and confetti to purchase…
