Can One Website Save Independent High Street Food Retailers?

Have you ever wandered around the high street looking at all the lovely food items independent retailers sell? From organic vegetables to cheese and bread, wouldn’t it be great if you could order these local items and get them delivered right to your front door?

Well now you can, thanks to a new website called Hubbub. The website allows customers to add items to their basket from a range of participating local food shops. Hubbub then collects the items from the shops and delivers them to your door all at once.

So if your local town has a fishmonger, bakery and delicatessen; you can have a cod fillet, a birthday cake and a range of cheeses all delivered to your door without having to visit the individual shops.

The service is currently only offered by 32 shops, covering 200 postcodes of London, but the company is hoping to expand its service to other areas of the UK. Delivery is free for orders over £75, but for anything else it is just £3.50.

But will the concept catch on and could is save the high street? It is a great idea, but surely independent retailers will be paying a fee to be listed on a website like this. Many food retailers would love to offer a delivery service to their customers to rival the big supermarkets, but is a separate website the way forward? Or would they be better trying to do it themselves?
