Are you one of the many people who love a good evening sat in front of the TV watching Coronation Street or are you one of those people who are forced into watching it, just to keep your partner happy. I certainly know which one I am – and so does my partner!
But either way, you will have come across Coronation Street on TV at some point in your lifetime, but have you ever thought that the soap could be turned into a musical featuring in commercial properties throughout the UK? Well it did, but it only lasted two shows in Manchester, before it was axed after receiving mixed reviews.
The musical, named the ‘Street of Dreams’ included a string of famous faces, such as Paul O’Grady – who was the narrator, Julie Goodyear and Kevin Kennedy, who played Bet Lynch and Curly Watts, respectively.
The show opened on 9 May and 10 May at Manchester Arena and was set to travel to commercial properties in Dublin, Belfast and Newcastle, but was cancelled after just two performances, according to reports from the BBC. But the production team is keen to “revisit the production and further develop ideas for the UK tour,” so this may not be the end for the musical.
Prior to the show commencing in the Manchester commercial property, the production team and cast were excited about the up and coming musical. Kieran Roberts Executive Producer of ITV Studios, expressed: “I’m thrilled to be involved with Street of Dreams. Trisha Ward’s wonderful music and lyrics are a very fitting celebration of Coronation Street’s history, its great storylines and its unforgettable characters.”
Paul O’Grady also added: “I’m a great fan of the street!! I’ve watched it for most of my life! Chunks of script from 30 years ago are engraved in my memory so to relive it all alongside unforgettable characters and talent on the stage, revisiting such iconic scenes from across the years, is just brilliant.”
He further added: “I can’t wait to watch it all come together and the reaction it receives,” – probably something he now regrets!
