A converted Yorkshire mill complex — which featured in the television soaps Emmerdale and Heartbeat — is now fully let following a near £3m upgrade.
During the past two years Sunny Bank Mills, between Leeds and Bradford, has undergone a £2m programme to turn it into a modern office complex, attracting more than 250 workers to the site. Now, after a further £175,000 investment, the historic 10,700 sq ft Sandsgate office block at the heart of the Edwardian mill has also been revitalised.
“We are now seeing a steady flow of new tenants into Sunny Bank Mills that are breathing new life into an historic complex,” explained William Gaunt, joint managing director of the mill owners Edwin Woodhouse. “And we are delighted to welcome two new tenants to Sandsgate, which is now completely full.”
The two firms completing the Sandsgate compliment are Dave Spink Photography, moving from Four Red Lane elsewhere within the Sunny Bank complex, and DH2 Solutions, a local company which specialises in providing assistance for disabled people living at home.
“Dave Spink arrived at Sunny Bank Mills a couple of years ago and we are delighted that the company has chosen to take more than 1,000 sq ft at Sandsgate to accommodate its expansion,” Gaunt continued. “Their decision is an endorsement of the first-class working environment we have tried so hard to achieve here.”
DH2 Solutions has taken a 230 sq ft office space in Sandsgate, not far from Farsley village. The firm’s managing director, Dave Howson, explained that as his company expanded, “I needed to locate to larger premises and I was lucky enough to find Sunny Bank Mills, which was absolutely perfect”.
He claimed the “ethos and ambiance of the historic old mill is wonderful”. Adding: “We recognised the potential of the Sandsgate unit immediately, which has been transformed into a stylish, well-finished office with some of the original features left intact.”
Property consultancy Dove Haigh Phillips (DHP) marketed the entire office facility alongside Jones Lang LaSalle. “These recent deals endorse the capital expenditure and attention to detail the refurbishment of Sunny Bank Mills has created,” said Mike Haigh of DHP.
The 1912 mill — once part of a much larger five mill complex dating back to 1829 — has been featured in numerous episodes of the Yorkshire-based soap opera Emmerdale and former Yorkshire police drama Heartbeat. Four years ago the site’s guardians, the Gaunt family, took the decision to finally end textile production on the site and convert all the buildings to commercial uses.
