If you are going on holiday between now and September and are travelling from Heathrow Airport, you are bound to come in contact with something to do with the Olympics as the commercial property is pulling out all the stops.

As an official Host Airport for the Olympic Games, the airport anticipates that around 80 per cent of the total athletes, sponsors and spectators attending the sporting event will travel through the airport. In addition, 15 per cent of all baggage that passes through the airport during this time will be sporting equipment.

Being one of the first places in London that international visitors will see, Heathrow Airport is going all out.

So what can you expect to see in the commercial property? During the next few weeks, expect to see:

  • Play areas
  • Ping-pong tables
  • An Olympic-themed art exhibition
  • Large photographs of athletes
  • Flags featuring Beefeaters and Bearskin Guards
  • A waxwork of Usain Bolt
  • Giant interactive globes
  • Appearances by Dora the Explorer, Horrid Henry and Benji
  • Live performances by the London Philharmonic Orchestra and the Salvation Army brass band
  • The official Olympic mascots will be around to meet and greet customers.

Speaking of the Olympic attractions at the airport, John Holland-Kaye, Commercial Director at the airport said: “Heathrow will be the first and last impression of London 2012 for thousands of visitors.

“We have worked hard to create a unique experience for our passengers, bringing the excitement and spirit of the Olympics directly to them, helping to make their journeys better and more memorable.”

Are you travelling to the Olympic Games from overseas via Heathrow Airport? What are you most looking forward to seeing when you arrive in London?
