Citing a desire to better serve its customer base and strengthen the company’s position for long-term growth, Mercedes-Benz USA has announced that it will move its US headquarters from its current location in New Jersey to Atlanta.

The company plans to relocate employees from its Montvale, New Jersey offices to a temporary location in Atlanta’s Central Perimeter in July.

About 1,000 employees will be affected by the move, so the company will arrange for it to take place in stages.

Mercedes-Benz USA plans to build a new headquarters in the Atlanta area with a price tag of approximately $93 million by the year 2017.

According to the Atlanta Business Chronicle, Daimler AG, the parent company, is considering building on a seven-acre site located at Georgia 400 and Abernathy Road in Sandy Springs, Ga. The new headquarters will measure 250,000 sq ft.

Atlanta is considered a “premier city” and relocating the headquarters there places it close to the company’s growing southern customer base, its Alabama manufacturing facility, and the port in Brunswick, Georgia.

Employees will benefit from the quality of life, cultural and recreational opportunities and the good schools available in the area.

Mercedes-Benz has been operating in Montvale, NJ since 1972 and occupies four buildings in Bergen County.

The company plans to continue to operate in Montvale and Robbinsville, NJ after the headquarters has been relocated.

Porsche has also moved south in the past few years, partly because it wanted greater proximity to global transportation.

The company, which is currently located in Sandy Springs, will be moving to a new $100 million headquarters near the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport next year.

The new headquarters will include a 150,000 sq ft office building as well as a test track, according to Atlanta television station 11 Alive.
