Posted on 9 April, 2013 by Neil Bird

Nearly 4,000 people attended a recent recruitment day held at Whiteley Shopping Centre. The event was held to fill the 1,000 positions available at the £84 million South Coast retail development which opens on May 23.

Whiteley, which lies between Portsmouth and Southampton, comprises 56 units set in a natural environment featuring open spaces and public art. The confirmed tenants include a mix of high street names and independent retailers including M&S, Topshop, H&M, River Island and Next. There are also a number of restaurants, bars and cafés to choose from offering everything from a drink or a light snack to a full evening meal.

The recruitment day offered job seekers the opportunity to meet retail representatives and learn more about the opportunities on offer. Over 2,000 people pre-registered to attend but over the course of the day the number turning up rose to 3,911.

Recently appointed shopping centre manager Neil Carter said; “We had a great response from the people of Whiteley and the local area to the recruitment fair.

“It was a tremendous success and we want to thank everyone who turned up and patiently waited to be seen.”

Mr Carter has a strong track record in the retail sector, most recently as centre manager at Parkway, Newbury. Prior to this he managed the County Mall in Crawley. He has also held positions with M&S and Debenhams as well as serving as a board member on several business district and town centre partnerships.

Also appointed recently is marketing manager Sue Duddington. She says; “It’s an amazing opportunity to launch a shopping centre, and to be involved in the process from the start when only two schemes are opening this year is something very special.

“We’ve just launched our Facebook and Twitter pages so customers can be involved in the action in the lead up to launch.”

Despite the high turnout for the recruitment day there may still be opportunities available for those unable to attend. Anyone who is interested can apply via the recruitment page on the Whiteley Shopping Centre website. In addition individual retailers will be holding recruitment events.
