For some, breaking out the air guitar on their favourite guitar solo in the middle of a club is compulsory for a night out. But for American’s performing air guitar is not just for a pub or nightclub, it is for the main stage.

A commercial property in New York is holding the Air Guitar Championships, where people can rock out to their favourite music without having to worry about their guitars getting damaged in cargo. But the fun doesn’t stop there as after the championship in New York, the winner will go on the represent their city in the International Air Guitar Championships, held in Finland on 24 August.

For those of you who may think this is some sort of a joke, rest assured this is a real competition that the entrees take very seriously.

One participant, Andrew Jackson Litz spoke of his passion for air guitar: “For a competition like this I will normally start six months in advance.

If you can get to the moment in the song where you truly believe that you are playing an air guitar, because if you can do that I feel like that will resonate with the crowd and they in that very moment of the song will in their mind say, ‘O my god, this guy is truly playing the air guitar,’ maybe the real guitar.”
