Market Traders Shun Development to Set Up New Shop

A market trader in Sheffield who has been running a successful butchers and fishmongers for over 70 years is shunning a move to a new market hall in favour of a shop location.

Castle Market

Simmonite butchers and fishmongers which is run by a pair of brothers, currently resides at Castle Market, but their time there is limited as the market hall is set for demolition soon. A new indoor market is currently being built in another part of Sheffield town centre but it will cost traders significantly more than their previous location.

Currently the brothers pay £30,000 to rent a market stall in Castle Market, but the new hall will cost them more than double. For a fraction more they could rent a shop in a central location which has more space and longer opening hours. Carl Simmonite spoke of the brother’s decision to open a shop rather than continue the tradition of a market stall.

He said: “We looked at the new plans for the market, and at the newly planned service charges. We would have to pay more for less space, have a limit on what we could sell, and a limit on our hours. We had to look elsewhere.”

Do you think the brothers did the right thing by shunning the new market hall? Or do you think they should have continued their family tradition regardless of the costs involved?
