High street retailer Marks and Spencer (M&S) has launched a seasonal recruitment drive to take on an additional 20,000 employees across the UK & Republic of Ireland as it continues its festive recruitment drive.

Successful applicants will be based in over 500 stores and will take part in a two-day induction training session ahead of their first day to make sure they are fully-equipped to offer the best possible customer service.

Roles available include M&S café assistants, customer assistants and store operation roles.

Recruits will also receive the excellent reward packages available at M&S, including a 20 per cent discount on M&S products.

At the end of last month, the retailer announced that it was employing 1,000 staff at its e-commerce distribution centre in Castle Donington, taking on individuals with health conditions and disabilities in part-time work for three months with the opportunity of extending some contracts should there be availability.

Last year more than 1 in 5 of the 15,000 Christmas workers were made full-time permanent employees after their seasonal contracts came to an end. The retailer is boosting its staffing levels in hope of extra festive custom.

In the week leading up to Christmas last year, staff assisted over 35 million M&S shoppers and this year all hopefuls, who must be able to work weekends, nights and Bank Holidays over Christmas, can find details of the application process and full role descriptions on the M&S website.

Commenting on the upcoming recruitment drive, Director of Retail at M&S, said: “Customers turn to M&S for the most important occasions, trusting us to deliver delicious Christmas lunch, the latest fashions and fantastic customer service.

“We want to make sure that our customer needs are met so were putting the call out for 20,000 passionate, service-centred recruits to come join the team and help make it a merry Christmas for millions of M&S shoppers.”

The retailer said that more than 400,000 hours will be worked each week by M&S workers in the run up to Christmas.
