Robert De Niro among Investors in Shanghai Property Complex

Actor Robert De Niro has invested in a new property complex in Shanghai, it is reported. It will include an arts centre, a boutique hotel, shops, and a cinema.

Project 179 is a 850,000 sq ft development located on the city’s waterfront. De Niro entered into the deal with the Shanghai Bund investment group. The property’s design will reflect 1920s Shanghai. Its amenities will include:

  • A five-star boutique hotel measuring 80,000 sq ft. Its design will be similar to the Greenwich Hotel and the Bowery Hotel developed by De Niro, Richard Born and Ira Drukier in New York
  • 200,000-300,000 sq ft of space for a roster of “marquee tenants, which will include a number of international retailers
  • Several restaurants which will be led by established restaurateurs which are currently operating distinguished establishments in the U.S.
  • A cultural performance centre and a multi-screen cinema

De Niro commented that Project 179 will pay homage to Shanghai’s “rich and storied past” and serve as a jewel in the city’s crown. The actor said he was looking forward to establishing the Bund district, located on Shanghai’s waterfront, as “one of the premier visitor destinations across the globe.”

The scope of the project includes restoring four vacant buildings. A fifth one will be built, and it will be named after the municipally-designed blocks of land it will be constructed on.
