So another year’s over and it’s time to say goodbye to 2012 and hello to 2013. Up and down the country people are already looking forward to tonight’s celebrations and businesses in the leisure industry are preparing for the busiest night of the year. There will be festivities taking place in many towns and cities so there will be no shortage of attractions. Below we have selected a few of the highlights.
Last year an estimated 250,000 people attended the New Year’s Eve firework display on the South Bank. This year is sure to be equally as popular and the organisers are promising another spectacular display of pyrotechnics.
The designated viewing areas include Victoria Embankment, Westminster Bridge, Waterloo Bridge, and the area in front of the London Eye which will be the focal point of the display. Crowds will begin gathering all evening, so to be certain of a good view it’s advisable to arrive early as these areas are expected to be full by 9pm or 10pm.
You are advised to travel to the display by public transport with Westminster and Embankment being the nearest tube stations. Once again, tube travel is free this evening. If you’re arriving by rail then Waterloo and Charing Cross will be the best options. The event is free and will feature entertainment as the clock ticks towards midnight, but you should be aware that entry to many nearby pubs and bars will be by ticket only.
Edinburgh’s traditional Hogmanay celebrations will see thousands of revellers take to the streets of the Scottish capital in one of the biggest New Year parties on the planet. Hogmanay is a massive celebration culminating in the giant firework display set against the stunning backdrop of Edinburgh Castle. This year the organisers promise 4.5 tonnes of fireworks will light up the sky to say goodbye to 2012.
Because of the popularity of Hogmanay in Edinburgh you will need a street party pass to access Princes Street which will be closed from dusk. If you are on an organised tour this is likely to be included.
So if you’re preparing to celebrate Hogmanay in Edinburgh you can look forward to enjoying one of the biggest and liveliest street parties of the night.
Of course you can also enjoy great New Year’s Eve parties and events in towns and cities throughout the UK. In Wales Cardiff is the place to be and Bristol is certain to be buzzing if you’re in the South West. In the Midlands Birmingham will be welcoming 2013 in style while Newcastle in the North East and Manchester in the North West are always good places to party.
Finally why not let your hair down in Weymouth? Tonight the Dorset town holds its annual New Year’s Eve fancy dress party. Last year the event attracted over 20,000 revellers and is billed as Britain’s biggest fancy dress party.
