History of Wales

Wales is a devolved country of the UK sharing a border with England. It is a largely mountainous country, as demonstrated by the Valleys and Snowdonia National Park. It also has miles of beautiful coastline, making Wales a major tourist destination. Preserved counties of Wales include Mid-Glamorgan, Gwynedd and Gwent.

The population of Wales is around 3 million, with the highest population centres found in South Wales. These include the vibrant commercial centres of the capital Cardiff and Swansea.

Wales has a strong sense of history and identity and the Welsh language is widely spoken. Welsh is one of Europe’s oldest languages and is the first language in many areas, particularly in the North and West. Among the legends associated with Wales are those of King Arthur and Merlin. Perhaps as a result of this, Pembrokeshire has long been known as the land of magic and enchantment.

The economy of Wales historically depended on copper, coal, iron and tin. Since the decline of these industries, business in Wales has diversified. The Welsh Assembly has a strategy designed to transform Wales into a dynamic modern economy by attracting inward investment and supporting growth.
