Independent chartered survey Sanderson Weatherall has emerged from the “commercial property turmoil” of the past few years with a clutch of new appointments and promotions at its Tyneside office.

The business — which has offices in Leeds, London, Manchester, Teesside and Bristol as well as Newcastle — has recruited experienced chartered surveyor, Darren Naylor. His duties will involve valuation work for banks and corporate and private clients across the North-East.

Other recent Newcastle appointments include Martin Smith, who has joined the building consultancy team as an associate partner, alongside graduate surveyors Jade Hadden and Amanda Haldane.

Emily Seager has joined the asset management department as an associate partner handling landlord and tenant cases, while Charlotte Marshall will gain experience with the commercial and retail agency team while on a year’s placement from Northumbria University.

Also promoted at Sanderson Weatherall is Alex Slack who has progressedfrom surveyor to senior surveyor, with senior surveyorsKevin McGorie, Victoria Bollands and Kenny Hiles all being made up to associate partners.

“Our recruitment of so many talented new colleagues is great news after the last few years of turmoil in the commercial property market,” said valuation team partner, David Downing. “This recruitment drive is indicative of both our commitment to growing the practice in the region and the increased level of activity in the commercial property market since the turn of the year.”

William Clarkeis returning to Britain from Saudi Arabia, where he worked for UGL Services, to expand GVA’s Birmingham-based investment team. As a senior surveyor his specialties include advising on the formal property handover procedure from principal contractors, due diligence and compliance and the provision of facilities management.

And after joining the property consultancy five years ago Sam Lawrence, has been promoted to director. Among the high-profile Birmingham city centre projects he has managed for GVA are Brindleyplace (pictured), The Axis Building and Victoria Square House.

The 182-year-old law firm Andrew & Co is expanding its commercial property team to make it one of the largest in the East Midlands.

The practice, which employs 60 staff at its offices in Lincoln and Newark, has appointed Paul Bloomfield as an associate. With more than 27 years’ experience he joins from Grantham-based T Balfe Construction, where he was an in-house company solicitor.

Julia Lock, recently promoted to commercial property team leader, commented: “Paul brings with him specific specialisms in construction and the care sector and his skills enhance our ‘centre of excellence’ approach to commercial property law.”

Cushman and Wakefield has appointed Alex Haigh as senior surveyor in its national retail agency team in Manchester. He previously worked at The Co-operative Group where he was a portfolio manager.

Capita — one of the UK’s leading multidisciplinary consultancies — has named Tim Matthews as the new head of its property and facilities management services team for its partnership with North Tyneside Council.

With 14 years’ experience in property management, he was previously the services team leader for the Newcastle office of DTZ and headed its Leeds office’s corporate real estate team.
