Office Romances and Three Guidelines You Should Follow

A Valentine’s Day Guide to Avoiding Trouble

There are plenty of opportunities to start a budding relationship in the office, like work parties and social events, as well as cosy chats by the vending machine. But before falling head over heels, you should think about the consequences if thing things go sour and your work life balance is all that is talked about in your office.

Before making your feelings clear, consider the three guidelines below to avoid being the focal point of office gossip.

Don’t punch above your weight

The idea of dating your boss may sound like a fairy tale – getting first refusal for promotions and overtime, but the reality can be far from it. People may start avoiding you at work in case what they tell you gets back to their boss. Also your boss could already be married and if so the label that comes with that could cause your real problems with fellow employees.

Many companies have guidelines in place about dating fellow colleagues, with some even forbidding supervisor-subordinate relationships. If this is the case, you could risk losing your job. Instead, choosing someone who is on the same level as yourself will be much less complex, and in the end may turn out to be much more than just an office romance.

Don’t publicise it on Facebook

The majority of us have posted a status at some point in our social media lives that contained a little too much detail. We live and learn, and this is exactly the time to keep your office romance to yourself, especially if you have half of your colleagues as your Facebook friends.

The office doesn’t need to see that you and so and so have been on a few dates and neither does the person who also has been on a few dates with the said person. Broadcasting this information on Facebook will more than likely come back to haunt you one day – sooner than you may think.

Remember why they pay you

Remember why you are at work in the first place. You were hired to do a job and in return you get paid. Using work emails to arrange your date for later will be monitored and will be used against you at a disciplinary. Be professional when you see each other in the office, save the flirty texts and gushing for break times.
