Shanaze Reade Rides into the Final

Posted on 10 August, 2012 by MOVEHUT

Shanaze Reade, the British Bicycle Motocross (BMX) Champion has secured her place in today’s BMX final at 4:30pm. The 23 year old, who was born in Crewe, first had a taste of BMX when she went along to watch her cousin race on a local BMX track when she was just 10 years old.

After watching her cousins, she decided to try it out for herself and hired a bike for just one pound – this became the best pound she ever spent.

She turned professional in 2007 and went onto win the UCI BMX World Championships in 2008, 2009 and 2010. She also competed in the first ever Olympic BMX event in Beijing in 2008. She made it to the final in the sport, but unfortunately she crashed into a fellow rider and was relegated to last place.

Speaking of her Olympic dream, Shanaze said: “I have won the worlds, I have won the Europeans but I have not won the Olympics. That is what keeps the fire burning all the time.

“It was the best thing that happened to me in Beijing to not win that Olympics because it gave me the rules of how to be an Olympic champion.”

The dream to become Olympic Champion came closer on Wednesday as Shanaze came fifth in the event, which progressed her onto the semi-finals. Today she competed in three runs in heat 1 of the semi-finals against 7 other riders, coming second overall.

The BMX Track is located near other Olympic commercial properties, just north of the Olympic Park. The women’s track is 440 metres long, whereas the men’s is 10 metres longer.

Movehut would like to congratulate Shanaze on her brilliant performance so far at London 2012 and wish her all the luck for the future.
