Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida is considering buying an unfinished office and retail complex located near the Seminole Towne Center mall. Company officials have announced that it is interested in the complex as a home for its subsidiary Florida Health Care Plan.

Rinehart Place is spread out over 22 acres, including several concrete buildings which are visible from Interstate 4. It is one of several properties the health insurance company is considering buying in Florida at present, according to Mark Wright, a spokesman for Florida Blue, the trade name for the Jacksonville-based Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida.

He stated recently that the company is conducting due diligence to determine whether it is feasible to purchase the property. Wright did not indicate what work would be completed at the centre or how many jobs would be created if the company ultimately decides to go ahead with the purchase.

Florida Health Care Plan, which currently operates out of Holly Hill, is an HMO that provides services in Volusia and Flagler counties. The property, located on Rinehart Road has been vacant for the past four years.

A fence surrounds its weed-filled lot, which includes 38,000 square feet of retail space and up to 180,000 square feet of office space in four two-storey buildings.
