Hammerson has announced that it has submitted a Proposal of Application Notice (PoAN) for a multi-million pound expansion of Aberdeen’s Union Square shopping and leisure destination.

Union Square opened in 2009 and has since established itself as a key hub for retail activity in the heart of the city. The proposal will seek to improve further on this and expand the current offering.

Along with new retail and leisure space, the forthcoming planning application will include a hotel, additional parking space and a reconfiguration of the existing retail area.

Ryan Manson, General Manager for Union Square, said: “We are delighted to be in a position to expand our offer and to promote Aberdeen as a regional destination further afield.”

He added that the submission of the PoAN signalled the beginning of a consultation process which will include public exhibitions where the plans will be explained in greater detail.

Councillor Jenny Laing, leader of Aberdeen City Council, has welcomed the proposals and believes that Hammerson’s vision will also be welcomed by local consumers.

“There’s obviously been concerns about the downturn in the oil and gas sector but I think this application coming forward shows there is confidence in the retail and leisure sector in the city centre,” she told the Press and Journal.

“A development of this size shows that the local economy remains buoyant. It’s a significant investment and I think it highlights the confidence that remains in the city of Aberdeen.”
